Can you help? Aldeburgh War Memorial – World War 1 ‘Behind the Names’

As you will know 2014 sees the 100th Anniversary of the start of World War 1 and many projects are being planned to commemorate this centenary.

Some years ago, Mike Good a former Mayor and Town Councillor of Aldeburgh carried out comprehensive research into the military history and records of the World War 1 names on the Aldeburgh War Memorial. Sadly, Mike now has Alzheimer’s so his wife, Lamorna, has asked me to continue his work by researching the personal stories and history of the men ‘Behind the Names’ as shown on the Memorial, with the aim of publishing a book next year.

I am therefore looking for family members and people who can help me with any information, photographs or family memorabilia to add to the research so far regarding the names, which among the eighty four listed include:

Alfred Colby ALLERTON, Alfred and Ernest BACKHOUSE, John BOTTERILL, Russell BURWOOD, Frank CABLE, James CADY, Alexander COMYNS-LEWER, Horace CREASEY, John and Thomas CRESSWELL, Stewart Alexander CRUM, Henry Fawcett GARRETT, Richard HAKEN, Christine JAY, George JEANS, Robert KERSEY, Frederick John MOUNTAIN, Arthur Aubrey PALLANT, Reginald Amherst PARGETER, William Robert RABETT, Richard L RAVEN, Claud Garrett SALMON, Ernest Edward SHEMMING, Brian THORNBURY, William James THURSTON, Henry Charles TIBBENHAM, Thomas Frank WADE Frederick WELFORD and Reuben William WOOD.

If anyone is able to assist me I can be contacted on my email address at charnwoodresearch@virginmedia.com or by phone on 01702 826469, via my website at http://www.charnwood-genealogy.com or by post to 8 Sackville Road, Southend on Sea, Essex, SS2 4UQ.

Thank you

Simon Last
