UPDATE: Photo Reunited – Do you have a connection to the GARNETT or TINNION families from Whitehaven in Cumbria?

UPDATE: This lovely old photograph has now been reunited with David GARNETT who emailed me to say that William Tinnion GARNETT was his 1st cousin 2 times removed and that William’s grandfather was his 2 times Great Grandfather and that he would love to add this to the many old photographs that he had (many without names) as it may help to identify them.

The photograph has now been sent on to him for his own family history archive, which as always makes all the research and time spent so worthwhile.

————————————————————————————————————————

At the recent postcard fair in Canterbury I was lucky enough to find this beautiful old cabinet photograph of a family which when I turned it over had loads of really useful information on the reverse.

On the back is written William Tinnion GARNETT born December 22 1879, James GARNETT born August 2 1881, Spedding GARNETT born June 20 1884 and Ada Margaret GARNETT born March 14 1886 – Photographed December 14 1886.

I was quickly able to find the GARNETT family on the 1891 census, as below, using all this fantastic information – they were living in Egremont in Cumberland at 24 East Road.

Source Citation: The National Archives of the UK (TNA); Kew, Surrey, England; Census Returns of England and Wales, 1891; Class: RG12; Piece: 4319; Folio: 13; Page: 20; GSU roll: 6099429 Source Information; Ancestry.com. 1891 England Census [database on-line]. Provo, UT, USA: Ancestry.com Operations Inc, 2005.

The family were William GARNETT aged 34 a General Manager at the Cooperative Society, Margaret his wife aged 31 and children William T aged 11, James aged 9, Spedding aged 6 and Ada M aged 5 – also with them was their niece Mary WILSON aged 13.

William GARNETT married Margaret TINNION in the April quarter of 1879 in Whitehaven in Cumbria – hence one of their children having the middle name TINNION.

William Tinnion GARNETT married Sarah MOSSOP in the April quarter of 1905 in Whitehaven registration district and I have found them on the 1911 census, as below, living in Manchester with their daughter Dorothy GARNETT aged 4 and William’s brother Spedding was also staying with them.

Do you have a family connection to the GARNETT or TINNION families as it would be great to reunite this lovely old photograph with its original family if possible.

If you do please message me via this blog or send me an email to the address below.

Many thanks

Simon LAST
